Are fats bad for you?

Not all fats are the same! The type of fats you eat can have a huge effect on your heart, brain and overall health…

*I remember having an introductory call with a girl who told me how she got told by her doctor that she needed to eat more fats- so she went away and had more butter, cheese ect. When she went back to the doctors and they found her bad cholesterol was much higher ??

Why? This is because she went for unhealthy fats and didn’t receive the correct guidance on how to improve her fat intake in a healthy way (=not all fats are the same)

So what are the different types of fats?

🟒 UNSATURATED FATS β€” the healthier fats

These are important for absorbing vitamins A, D, E & K and provide essential fats needed for normal brain, eye, heart and hormone function (*replacing saturated fats with unsaturated fats can also help improve good cholesterol levels)

Great sources include:

πŸ«’ Extra-virgin olive oil

🐟 Oily fish β€” salmon, sardines, mackerel provide omega-3s (EPA & DHA)

πŸ₯‘ Avocado

πŸ₯œ Nuts β€” walnuts, almonds, pistachios & others

🌱 Seeds β€” chia, pumpkin, sunflower & others

πŸ₯œ Nut & seed butters β€” choose ones that are mainly nuts/seeds with little added sugar or salt

🟑 SATURATED FATS β€” limit these

Saturated fats aren't something you need to completely eliminate, but eating a lot of them can raise LDL (β€œbad”) cholesterol

Common sources include:

🧈 Butter & ghee

πŸ₯© Fatty meats

πŸ§€ Cheese

πŸ₯› Cream

πŸ₯“ Bacon & sausages

🌴 Palm oil

πŸ”΄ TRANS FATS β€” best avoided

They can raise LDL cholesterol, lower HDL (β€œgood”) cholesterol & are found in highly processed foods and products made with partially hydrogenated oils…. with many countries now restricting their use

πŸ’‘ it's about choosing better sources of fat and hope this helped to provide more insight xx
